Watching and Waiting
I was standing over the stove top cooking the Chicken Tarragon when I felt my impatience grow. The timer was set to brown each breast filet for 4 minutes on a side. The three boneless breasts huddled next to each other in the cast iron frying pan while I watched the timer tick away the minutes. I had already measured and set out the other ingredients so the only thing left to do was WAIT.
The timer seemed to move at a snail’s pace. I watched the seconds count down on the timer.
I’ve made this dish countless times, and I don’t ever remember being so impatient for four little minutes to pass. I began wondering as I noticed my impatience growing to turn those brown filets, “How could I be so antsy?”
Then I realized that if I could be so impatient over four mere minutes, no wonder I was having such a hard time waiting on the Lord for Him:
* to answer my prayers,
* to meet my needs,
* to settle my anxious heart,
* to move in the circumstances of my life
* and to accomplish His purpose in my trials so that they would be over.
“Get a grip, Janis,” I told myself. “Stop staring at the timer. Soon enough it will be time to flip those chicken breasts.”
Unfortunaetley, God’s timer is not usually set to just four minutes. Sometimes it’s four days, four months, four years, or four ever. And we have to WAIT. So while we are waiting, we need to stop staring at the timer. We need to turn our attention on the Lord and:
* spend time with Him in prayer
* read and meditate on His word
* be busy about the Lord’s work which He has prompted us to do
* be prepared to encourage others along the journey
* persevere in faith
* live so He is glorified in our lives
As I was looking up the word “wait” in the Bible, I could not believe how many times it is used in various books and passages. Sometimes it means that we need to wait on the Lord, sometimes it means to wait before we act, and sometimes it is used to say that if we wait to act, we are showing a lack of faith.
In each situation in our lives where we are waiting, we must seek the Lord to determine what His desire is for us.
I’m a long way from making progress in this “waiting room of the Lord’s.” My anxious heart wants answers and direction yesterday. So I need to heed what I have posted here. Look to His word and learn how to wait.
“Morning by morning, O Lord, you hear my voice; morning by morning I lay my requests before you and WAIT IN EXPECTATION.” PSALM 5:3 NIV.

Janis – Wonderful post! I think one of my favorite verses on “waiting” (which I also strongly dislike having to do) is: ” I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in his word I put my hope.” (Ps. 130:5) I think I like this verse so much because it tells me what I need to do while waiting – I need to hope in His Word. And I further love that then in that same chapter, verse 7, tells me WHY I can wait & hope: “”for with the Lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.” I love that His redemption is FULL. He does not do anything 1/2 way. Thank you for this post as I so needed to read this Psalm this morning. May we both wait & hope in His Word!
Hugs!
Joanne
Hi Joanne, thank you for sharing this Psalm on waiting that is so encouraging. It strengthens during the wait to know the One who is holding us while we are leaning on Him.
Blessings,
Janis
OH I am not patient. I appreciate the reminder. Waiting on God and his timing and praying for wisdom in the mean time is just what I should do.
Hi Helene, thank you for stopping by. Waiting for the Lord’s timing is difficult but seeking His wisdom while we wait will make that time a blessing. Glad you came by this morning.
Blessings,
Janis
Dear sweet Janis
Have you ever read the little book of Brother Lawrence called The Practice Of The Presence Of God? It is a priceless gem. He taught me that picking up a straw for the love of God makes it a holy act. Just like washing dishes, eating, breathing, sleeping and just about everything else when we do it out of love for our Pappa. I certainly think browning chicken breasts fits this category perfectly when you do it out of your beautiful heart for your Lord.

Mia, I need to read that book again!! So glad you mentioned it. I love the way you said that browning chicken breasts fit into a “holy act.” It brought a smile to my face.
Blessings,
Janis
Oh I do not like the waiting room either 🙂 I wrote a post on it a while back just because I struggle with it so!! That’s where all of my posts come from…things I need work on, lol. Thanks for the reminder today. ♥
Nannette~thank you for stopping by today. I feel like the waiting room is the torture chamber. It seems like that’s the only place in life any longer where time moves slowly–as it did when we were in school 🙂
Blessings,
Janis
Awesome devotion Janis!
Linda
Thank you, Linda. It’s always a blessing to have you comment!

I truly believe that one of the hardest things that God asks us to do is to wait. Especially when the things that we wait for are things that we believe would be totally in His will. That is when trust is tested the most…
My favorite verse about waiting is Isaiah 40:31 (in the NASB translation). So often I long to soar on those wings like an eagle, and to walk and not become weary.
GOD BLESS!
I had to chuckle as I imagined you waiting to flip that chicken. Yes, waiting on the answer may take more than four minutes, and I like the way you said four-ever. (It probably seems that way at times.) Thank you for sharing with us here at “Tell Me a Story.”
Hi Janis, Yes, my all time favorite that the Lord gave to me several years ago is: : Psalm 27;13,14 which says, :I WOULD HAVE DESPAIRED UNLESS I HAD BELIEVED THAT I WOULD SEE THE GOODNESS OF THE LORD IN THE LAND OF THE LIVING. WAIT FOR THE LORD, BE STRONG AND LET YOUR HEART TAKE COURAGE YES WAIT FOR THE LORD;
I have had to refer to that in many different circumstances and I believe the Lord is finally working that into my heart.
Karen
Waiting on the Lord is not always easy. But I have found that the more I wait on Him, the more full of faith I become. One of my favorite verses on waiting is Psalm 27:14 “Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”
Good Morning Janis! Waiting is a hard thing for me. Whether it’s chicken or a prayer to be answered, it seems like I want it NOW. I’m sure this tickles the Lord to no end. There is a passage that says that the mercies of the Lord are never spent. “wait for it”. Ugh. Ok. I’ll wait.
But maybe I won’t like it. I need to strengthen my perseverance muscles!
Good to see you 🙂

A wonderful post, Janis! I’d love you to link up for Three Word Wednesday!! Thanks for sharing your heart. My favorite verse on waiting… Isaiah 40:31 “But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Blessings to you.

Determining what His desire is for us and when it is is the important everyday issue. Occasionally, our world changes, our schedule is redone, our body gets too much of our attention. All I can do each day is ask Him what I’m supposed to do and be obedient. Ain’t perfect, but do love Him desperately, want to serve Him monetarily. Thank you.
Janis…patience is never an easy thing to learn. I have struggled with waiting at different times in my life. I have also learned that His ways and timing are always better than mine, Thank you for sharing at WJIM’s Monday’s Musings.
Waiting is so hard isn’t it! I’m not great at waiting either. My son is waiting for a free gift at the moment from his favourite comic Horrible Histories and is desperate each day for the post to come. Then he faces the disappointment when it doesn’t arrive. I must admit I can be a bit like this myself when I’m waiting for a parcel even though I’m not 9 anymore (obviously!)
Love what you have shared here about slowing down and accepting God’s timing.
Thanks for linking up at Essential Fridays.
Blessings
