“Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord, have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:10 NIV
Blessed Be the Name of the Lord
Lyrics by
Matt and Beth Redman
Blessed be your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s all as it should be
Blessed be your name
When the sun’s shining down on me
When the world’s all as it should be
Blessed be your name
Blessed be your name
On the road marked with suffering
Though there’s pain in the offering
Blessed be your name

Praising God comes easily to our hearts and lips when all the world is right. When the blessings fall from heaven like spring showers, praises for the Lord and His goodness roll off our tongues.
But in the midst of trials and suffering, the words are harder to come by. We stumble over the feelings of our heart. We cry out in pain, as we should, but we often forget to say, “Still I will praise you.”
Where can we find the relief from the pain so that we can praise Him again? It is in coming to Him with all the misery, praising Him instead of running away that we will find the peace we so desire.
And in that dark place, we grow in Him, knowing that He is capable and willing to care for us, to comfort us, to deliver us in time to a place where the sun once again shines.
This song was handpicked for the funeral that we attended last week for one of our young women’s leaders. I’ve worshiped the Lord with those lyrics many times in church and nodded my head thinking, “Yes, Lord, when it’s tough, I will choose to praise you.” But my best of intentions have crumbled often under the weight of the trial.
Yet, here I stood hearing those lyrics once again. Singing those lyrics with a family who had just lost their wife, mother, sister, daughter–and a church overflowing with friends who chose to say, “Yes, Lord, even in this pain, blessed is your name. ‘You give, and take away’, but still we will bless your name.”

That was true worship and trust.

beautiful Janis
Janis,
What a beautiful picture! The scripture is one of my favorites. So is the song, Nicely done.
Beautiful picture and great message! Thanks for sharing.
What a beautiful tribute to your friend and their family as they worshipped the Lord at the funeral. And what a great reminder to the rest of us as we face suffering and trials during our daily lives.
Love you,
~Ceal~
What a beautiful photograph, Janis. This song is one of my favorites. Praying for your friend’s family and loved ones. Bless you all in this loss.
Janis, I love your photo (I grew up on the Atlantic Ocean and sorely miss it). The waves remind me of the Lord’s constant working and blessing in my life. Always there, steady, washing me with His Word! Thanks for sharing your beautiful photo.
Blessings,
Christine
A wonderful seaside photo on a beautiful day! The Psalms give us so many comforting verses!

In October the Lord gave me that song after a friend’s son died of a brain tumor. I was so deeply saddened and felt such a burden for the family. I was noting the pretty sunset outside and all of a sudden I was singing that song in my head and I couldn’t quit singing it and then every time I got into my car for the next few days it kept coming on the radio. I felt the Lord telling me “to praise Him in this loss”. When we sang that song again at the service this past week I was just amazed once again at God reminding me we must trust Him and praise Him no matter what the circumstances. Love how you have expressed this in your post! 🙂
This picture made me feel like I could hear and smell the ocean. It must bring God joy to know we trust His ways enough to praise Him in our heart breaking days.
Blessings,
Pamela
Janis, I was so uplifted by this blog post. I haven’t had much time to comment, but I wanted to comment on this one. Lisa had shared that they sang this song at the memorial, and I was needing comfort, so I started playing it. I cried and cried. I then went and picked up my daughter and it came on the radio in her car. It has given me much comfort in these days that have been filled with both sorrow and blessing. Love you, dear friend.
I love this song too. We sing it in church sometimes. The picture is beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Blessings,
Charlotte
A comforting hymn and inspiring photo.
