“Lord Reign in Me”

Janis Van Keuren

Sunrise over California on a chilly winter morning–Christmas 2010      Standing with arms raised in praise to the Lord, the music washed over me in church this morning. Our worship team called it a song of dedication.       My heart soared with the lyrics.  The song was not new to me. Though it had been a while since I’d heard it.      Like fresh dew falling from the heavens, the words brought clarity to my mind. What a … Continue reading →

A Week of Thanksgivings

Janis Van Keuren

Trees turn Autumn shades~located in front of our church       The wind was blowing, a chill in the air. Autumn sung the wisps of her crisp song. Clouds billowed across the sky while yellow leaves quivered, tree rooted in a blanket of green. For sure the time to give Thanks is near.     I churned my grocery cart through the aisles. Celery, lettuce, parsley, and onion, bagged, tied, and tossed in the cart. Zipped past the fruit, picked up … Continue reading →

Delectable, Divine Ganache Chocolate Cake

Janis Van Keuren

My first taste of this heavenly treat was about a week before my birthday.  One of the teachers at school brought a chocolate cake to celebrate a friend’s birthday. The cake looked appealing with the chocolate fans on top and the crumbly fresh cake under the frosting. Once the velvety chocolate slid across my taste buds, though,  appeal changed to tantalizing delight.  My flavor senses tingled as every rich morsel inched its way over my taste buds. … Continue reading →

Seeing Through the Eyes of Safety

Janis Van Keuren

In keeping with the privacy of our students, I did not use any photos from the Fire Safety Even; This photo taken near our home           Wriggly children snake across fire hoses woven through the grass. Goggles mimic darkness. Thick smoke engulfs a burning building. Sight removed, they crawl end to end along the hose. An imitation of blindness, they have only hands to feel their way.      Which one would win the race? In my heart, I knew. My … Continue reading →

Gifty, Trendy, and Tasty–Upscale POPCORN

Janis Van Keuren

Another taste treat to add to your Fall repertoire      One of the best things about conferences is the exploration of a city and its yummy food. While at the Christian Writers’ Conference near Phoenix last week, we discovered POPCORN! Not just any POPCORN, but out-of-this-world, topped with tantalizing flavor POPCORN. Fourteen different flavors. Caramel, Cheddar, Nacho, Sour Cream & Onion, White Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Rocky Road, Cinnamon Bun to name a few. The world-famous Zebra™ Chocolate Popcorn made its … Continue reading →

A Step in the Write Direction

Janis Van Keuren

(NOTE: I’m a little embarrassed to say that I just noticed the title I chose for this post is the same title as Donna Clarke Goodrich’s new book. She was one of the authors at the conference. I guess a lot really stuck with me from that conference. My humble apologies to Donna.)      To write is to reveal oneself to the world. But to write as a Christian is to reveal Christ to the world. My words must be His … Continue reading →

Top of the Charts for September

Janis Van Keuren

Leaves Changing Colors on a local mountain top–2009          We’re moving into Fall with its brilliant colors, rich tastes, and heady fragrances.  October ushers in the holiday season. Temperatures are cooling, even here in the desert, and there’s a quickness in my step as I look forward to the festive seasons and changes in God’s creation that lay ahead.     With this in mind, perhaps it would be a good idea to see which of the September posts had the most … Continue reading →

In the Quiet of the Storm

Janis Van Keuren

Thunder rumbled all afternoon as the monsoon unleashed its spellbinding, restful power upon my weary body.  Wind chimes rang one loud clang then flailed with the gusts of wind whipping and bending backyard trees and bushes.  I sat curled up on my quiet couch, book opened in hands as I watched nature’s dance outside my window.     How many days have I longed for this time when I could sit quietly and listen to the music of creation?  All … Continue reading →

Cleansing Action

Janis Van Keuren

Taco salad, chock full of meat, melted Colby/Jack cheese, torn lettuce leaves, chopped bell pepper and tomatoes, green chilies, and crowned with Fritos was on the dinner menu.  Carrying the brim-filled salad bowl to the table with my left hand, I removed the new blue and yellow flower centerpiece with my greasy-from-chips right hand.  Too anxious to devour this scrumptious entree, I had not washed my hands before juggling both items.  Thinking my prized new decor would be … Continue reading →
