A New Home

Janis Van Keuren

My keyboard clicks out the first few words in my new surroundings and I feel the excitement. Those butterflies swirling around with anticipation of walking out onto a new stage–a new platform. I gaze up at the blue ribbons dancing above my head and floating around my side. And once again, I’m a self-conscious teenager gliding across the gym floor, dressed for the winter ball in a stylish smooth satin bodice with a poofy skirt. The crystal globe sparkles light … Continue reading →

Giving Thanks Again

Janis Van Keuren

For days my heart has been tugging at me to count my blessings again! It’s a drawing that brings joy just thinking about it. Relief, hope, love, and deep gratitude are all tied up in this aching. And I cannot let it go another day. My very being cries out to proclaim the goodness of the Lord. I started counting my blessings in April of 2010 with Ann Voskamp’s Gratitude Community. Then the name changed to Multitude Mondays and I … Continue reading →

Love~The Word

Janis Van Keuren

His Creation Reflects His Love — squint and you’ll see a heart “Let them give thanks to the Lord  for his unfailing love  and his wonderful deeds for men,”  Psalm 107:8 NIV (and recurring throughout the Psalm)  The word kept ringing in my ears. It was shouted from the rooftops and whispered from the pastor’s podium. It was tucked in every encouraging note that slipped across my table. It was spoken as wisdom from those closest to me and even … Continue reading →

A New Year’s Resolution with Purpose

Janis Van Keuren

“and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.” Col.3:10 Wrapped in snowman throws, hubby and I curled up to watch a 3D version of the movie “Hugo.” Woven into the French tapestry and ambiance was an unexpected New Year’s quote–a theme woven into the fabric of our human DNA. Purpose. We must have purpose. Little Hugo, part urchin, part heart-tugging waif who keeps the clocks running in the train … Continue reading →

Peace With Yourself

Janis Van Keuren

Well, here I go for a second time writing this post. Somehow Blogger decided to publish–without my knowledge or even pushing the publish button. Of course at that time, there was nothing on the page!! And then I wrote for two hours…..And. It. Was. All. Gone! When autumn winds began to blow before the crush of the Christmas panic, I met an incredible writer at a Christian writers conference. And I made a promise. A promise to post a review … Continue reading →

Five Minute Friday Challenge–Fight

Janis Van Keuren

Photo by djclear904 on Flicker Creative Commons Each week, Lisa-Jo invites us join her in writing for 5 minutes straight on ONE word. No corrections, no pauses, just a free-flowing thought process. Mind to fingers to paper. This week’s word is FIGHT Ready. Set. Go. Fight. It always conjures up images of two men bouncing around a ring, throwing punches, proving their prowess. Masculinity is so confusing at times. Why do men offer themselves up in a bloody ring just … Continue reading →

Does Your New Year Hold Promise

Janis Van Keuren

A New Year opens up like the budding of a new blossom. Some blossoms are filled with a sweet fragrance. Some blossoms have large, colorful petals. Some blossoms unfurl with spots, scars from pest-infested days. And some blossoms open quickly, announcing their presence to the world, then suddenly the petals fall off in rapid succession. The memory of the flower is gone.      We cannot predict how the New Year will unfold anymore than we can predict … Continue reading →

Angels All Around

Janis Van Keuren

A special friend stopped by today. Unexpectedly. In her hand, she held a Christmas present meant just for us writers. Pencils standing at attention with their points poking up encircled a fashionable holder.     Kindred spirits we are. I felt the bond of friendship deepening.Where could she find such a perfect gift? She casually mentioned that it just happened–“while looking in and out of the shops.” I imagined her strolling the aisles, poking in those cutesy boutique … Continue reading →

Celebrating in His Majestic Creation

Janis Van Keuren

We stepped onto the small wooden deck extending from our cozy room and gazed in amazement at the scene before us. Autumn trees bursting with colors of burnt orange and golden yellow bordered the glassy creek stretching toward the red rock mountain. Like a bridal aisle bids the beloved, the creek drew our eyes slowly toward the majestic red rock mountain framing the scene with God’s majestic glory.      The beginning of a new day, a … Continue reading →

“O Lord in the Morning”

Janis Van Keuren

“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.” Psalm 59:16 NIV      The morning shaft of light penetrates the darkened sky. Hope and promise rise in the eastern sky. Peace marks the stillness of new day.      If I could rise like the new day in quiet and stillness with joyful anticipation of God’s power holding what lay ahead, … Continue reading →
