Rest–For It Is Rare To Rest

Janis Van Keuren

Time alone.  Just the two of us.  Time to refresh our spirits, our marriage, our romance.     From the airport, we took the scenic, woodsy route to our destination.  A road that shifted gears from the racing daily pace and gently eased us into neutral, calmer moments. Stands of Coastal Redwoods lined the narrow winding road beckoning us to roll down the windows and let the surrounding beauty fill our minds with wonder and praise. They marked the … Continue reading →

The Answer to Prayer That I Still Don’t Understand–Prayer Series, Part 4

Janis Van Keuren

Cousins and their family with Their Sweet Little Girls          This is the fifth and last part of the series on Prayer.  This is a repost of an article that appeared earlier.         It was a sultry August day in the San Fernando Valley.  Perfect pool weather.  We puffed air into the inflatable kiddy pool and let the hose run til the water was splashing deep.  A couple of wind-up fishies and frogs, and we were set.  A precious … Continue reading →

He Sets the Scene

Janis Van Keuren

The desert sky in summer just around the corner from our home       “My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” Isaiah 32:18 NIV      Who would have ever thought that the Lord meant the desert to be my peaceful dwelling place?  That in the desert our family would build a secure home–as secure as we, with all of our faults, could make it?  That, here, in the heat that nauseates my … Continue reading →

A Pop-cake for Tasty Tuesday

Janis Van Keuren

Pop-cakes to Top the Morning           Looking for that elegant yet simple breakfast or brunch that treats your family to a delectable spring or summer platter?  Just beat up a few eggs, milk, flour, and salt, whisk it in the oven, and pull out a surprise that has risen like a souffle!      A pop-cake is an 8-inch sized version of the famous popovers served with prime rib on a cold winter’s night.  The breakfast treat, however, does … Continue reading →

Did you “Ooh” and “Ah” ?

Janis Van Keuren

“Has everyone practiced their ‘oohs’ and ‘ahs’,” he asked our group, grinning as we settled into cloth or plastic bound chairs.   Happy faces smiled and voices chattered up there on the knoll that stared across to the majestic Pusch Ridge Mountains. Anticipation of the show to come sparked a myriad of conversations.  People standing in the Wisconsin snow for the world’s best-tasting custard.  The most beautiful spot to camp in South Dakota. The snooty RV sites … Continue reading →

The Land of the Free and Home of the Brave

Janis Van Keuren

Last summer, we had the unique privilege of providing a home, a nesting spot for a Morning Dove and her two fledglings.  Perched in a crook of our front door wreath, the mama created her home, gathering extra twigs and dried grass to loosely pad the floor.  Above the flaming red roses and delicate, white poppies, the mama dove settled in. Twisted garland of sparkling stars added a touch of elegance to her newly made home. Behind a mini … Continue reading →

Panting for Water

Janis Van Keuren

In this dry, parched desert, water is a necessity, not just a fashion statement that you carry with you. The thermometer streaks red to 109 degrees.  Leaves on the trees shrivel under the blazing sun’s heat.  Birds take refuge in the shade of scrub bushes and the streets and sidewalks are barren of people as everyone hides in air-conditioned homes, stores, or places of work.     Water, the life-quenching drink, glides over prune-like lips.  It slides over the tongue, … Continue reading →
