Easy Crock Pot Beef Stew

Janis Van Keuren

Autumn is in the air even in the desert. Cooler evenings and mornings that stir up warmth in me and give me a desire for all things hearth and home. As we take out the throws and snuggle up on the sofa, making the evenings cozy, I take out my fall and winter recipes. Family favorites.    Aromas of meat cooking and sauces bubbling fill the kitchen as hubby comes home from work. The warmth of those foods spread a … Continue reading →

A New Chapter in His Majestic Creation

Janis Van Keuren

Four nights under the His canopy of stars. Almost five days of trekking through His forest of towering pine trees. In awe of God, I spread open His word and worshiped Him for His glorious creation that brought me peace.

The Holiness of Rest

Janis Van Keuren

My feet touch the criss-cross brick pavers with sentimental recollection. Memories of salt air brushing against my face. Walking hand-in-hand with the man I’ve loved for more years than I thought I could count. Sunsets sinking into the ocean’s horizon while we cuddle on Hawiian, floral beach towels. In this quaint, artistic town sculpted around a God-carved nook in the ocean, we once again feel the

The Man Who Trusts in the Lord

Janis Van Keuren

“But blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes; its leaves are always green….”  Jeremiah 17:7 and 8 NIV       It may have been Father’s Day but it felt like Mother’s Day to me. Our family was together~those of us still living here at home. We … Continue reading →

A Delectable Anniversary

Janis Van Keuren

Fondue, once a trendy dish of the 70s and 80s, is making a comeback. Last fall I prepared two fondue pots for our family shortly after our son came home on leave after boot camp. There were 5 of us hunched over an old glass-topped coffee table, also from the 70s. But it was an evening to remember. Fondue forks with tender chunks of filet piercing each other’s meat as they boiled in the fondue pot. Forks got … Continue reading →

A Fire Storm of Words

Janis Van Keuren

I gazed up at the sky, overcome once again by a vibrant Summer Sunset in this blistering desert. Quickly I grabbed my camera and snapped away before the colors faded and the clouds pulled apart like cotton candy. When I checked the views billowing into my camera’s viewfinder, I was struck at the deep roiling red captured in my first photo. It eerily reminded me of fire more than a peaceful sunset ushering in a docile evening. … Continue reading →

Sesame Seed Chicken–Another Favorite

Janis Van Keuren

Sesame Seed Chicken with Broccoli Crumb Casserole and Stove Top Dressing          I figure it is still barely Friday here in Arizona, so I’m legally posting a recipe for Ann Kroeker’s site Food on Fridays. While I await a letter from my youngest son who is in Navy Boot Camp, I thought I might include one of his favorite recipes that I made while he was still home. Yes, this one is chicken. If you know our family, you … Continue reading →

The Dream Abandoned On The Plane

Janis Van Keuren

The text from youngest beeped at me, “(Lol) Sean Miller is on my flight.” The thoughts start whirring as I walk through the grocery story. The basketball coach of the University of Arizona is on the plane with youngest. The basketball coach for whom Jordan was one of several team managers a couple of years ago.     It was the road we all thought youngest would travel. Keep working for the team, continue his major in Journalism, and blaze a … Continue reading →

Broccoli Crumb Casserole~Holidays in July

Janis Van Keuren

In the middle of July with the temperature roasting us at 104 degrees, you may be asking yourself, “Why would she turn on the ovens to make dinner?” For our family, these past couple of weeks have been like winter holidays for us–as far as the dinner fare is concerned.     We’ve taken this opportunity to celebrate as if these were holidays, fixing our youngest son’s favorite meals and side dishes~as we all prepare for the real farewell. Farewell to … Continue reading →

“Setting Sail” with His Kindness

Janis Van Keuren

Nervous, as I always am before an event that I am hosting, I checked off my last minute list of goodies to be packed in the car for the party. Star-shaped cookies wrapped in wristbands, two floral centerpieces, the cake, photos of our youngest, the Navy journal, and, of course, the camera. Everyone was in the car when I glanced back and saw youngest’s jeans–they had the fashionable hole on the knees. I started fraying like his jeans, and … Continue reading →
