Overflowing Blessings

Janis Van Keuren

With Hubby’s recovery from knee replacement surgery, I’ve discovered an abundance of blessings that I have taken for granted. For example, our dog’s continual exit and entrance of the house was mostly taken care of by Hubby. The table was cleared after dinner by my man. An extra item for dinner was picked up at the grocery store on Hubby’s way home from work. These mundane, small favors all add up a basket brimming with blessings at day’s weary … Continue reading →

Finding Faith in His Delight

Janis Van Keuren

Tucked between the bed and nightstand, I braced myself for what lay ahead in my morning devotions. Would there be more doubts and struggles or would I find the rest and peace I longed for? The darkness had engulfed me for months but the Lord was re-revealing Himself to me, Scripture by Scripture; whisper by whisper.     I clung to the words I already knew He had infused into my weary spirit. Each morning I read those words I had … Continue reading →

Hubby Gets Out

Janis Van Keuren

It’s amazing how beautiful life seems when you are seeing it with new eyes. Eyes that have only seen the inside of one’s house for the last two weeks. The sky seems bluer, the trees bloom greener. Every white cloud  paints a picture. The desert heat feels refreshing against your skin. Hope fills your vision like a rainbow.    Today was Hubby’s first outing after knee replacement surgery two weeks ago. He drank in the beauty  surrounding him. Grateful to … Continue reading →

The Whale’s Tale

Janis Van Keuren

So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:21 NIV      First sight is a spray that rises into the air. Then it curves its back, ready to dive.      The tail scoops water as it slices air and sea. This great creature of God’s design … Continue reading →

Raindrops and Russia and a Special Name

Janis Van Keuren

Mugginess that engulfed most of the country was breathing hard through my senses that day. With every step, it threatened to rain gloom on my outlook for the day. A promise of joy and laughter, sharing and playing was on the horizon but it was disappearing behind the clouds.     The stifling air seemed determined to choke off my delight. Then the doorbell rang and in a moment the ray of sunshine and joy standing on our … Continue reading →

His Fragrance Surrounds Us

Janis Van Keuren

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.” 2 Corinthians 2:14-16a NIV      Have you ever been around Christians who draw you in just by their … Continue reading →

The Skies Show Off

Janis Van Keuren

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.” Psalm 19:1 NIV      My favorite season has arrived in the desert. Monsoon. The clouds roll in dark and ominous.Thunder bowls across the heavens. Lightning zig zags through the clouds like celestial fireworks. Then clouds gush forth their moisture to refresh the patches of drought-ridden soil. In less than an hour, the sky rolls up her show and moves across the vast blue … Continue reading →

Could Chip, The Wonder Dog, Be a Sled Dog?

Janis Van Keuren

When we went on a dog-sled excursion through the mountains of Skagway, the mushers explained to us the extensive training and endurance these dogs are put through before they can run the 9-day-long races in Alaska and Canada. A good temperament, strength, an athletic physique, intelligence, and a hardy appetite are essential.      The musher is the dog trainer, the one to raise the dog and the one who races the dog, if only in small races. Our … Continue reading →

The Sun and Shield That Makes Us Blameless

Janis Van Keuren

Alaskan Sunset over the Pacific, on the ocean between Glacier Bay and Seward   “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Psalm 84:11b NIV       When we strolled out on the ship’s deck around 10:30 p.m., seeing the ball of orange setting into the Western horizon was a favor indeed. Most days were wrapped in clouds blowing brisk winds … Continue reading →

He Forgets Us Not

Janis Van Keuren

The real Alaska State Flower–the Forget-Me-Not Embarrassed in blue because the pretty white flower I had featured here originally is a dogwood. Not the Alaskan Forget-Me-Not. However, it is still a wildflower and you can find it here. This photo was taken by asseabird, courtesy of Flicker Commons License.                Blanketing the state of Alaska in riotous colors of pink, blue, and white are the perennial Alpine Forget-Me-Nots. Named the state flower of Alaska, these wildflowers cover slopes and mountainous meadows promising to … Continue reading →
