Between the Cloud and the Pillar of Fire; the Sunrise and the Sunset

Janis Van Keuren

Sunrise            The the Lord will create over all of Mount Zion and over those who assemble there a cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night; over all the glory will be a canopy. It will be a shelter and shade from the heat of the day and a refuge and hiding place from the storm and rain.” Isaiah 4:5-6 NIV      Because I am not an early-morning riser, I have missed the … Continue reading →

The Pleasures of Starting School

Janis Van Keuren

It has been two weeks since school started here, but it feels like the first day to me. I have assessed my student’s need, and with an enthusiasm that comes with the start of each new school year, I scoured the local teacher supply store and Michael’s. My eyes dart around the store, blinking at the shiny and slick–flashcards, stickers, posters, games for learning. The smell and feel of  “New” ways to teach causes excitement to bubble up within … Continue reading →

Playing in the Street

Janis Van Keuren

Standing on the side of the road in the golf cart path, I noticed a familiar car coming toward me. Curious, I watched the approaching vehicle until I recognized its owner. Our friend slowed down and poking his head out the open window, he jokingly asked me what I was doing in the street.     Camera in hand, I teased back, “I’m playing in the street!”     Carefree laughter spilled out from within me.     “You’d better be careful, there,” he scolded … Continue reading →

Overflowing Blessings

Janis Van Keuren

With Hubby’s recovery from knee replacement surgery, I’ve discovered an abundance of blessings that I have taken for granted. For example, our dog’s continual exit and entrance of the house was mostly taken care of by Hubby. The table was cleared after dinner by my man. An extra item for dinner was picked up at the grocery store on Hubby’s way home from work. These mundane, small favors all add up a basket brimming with blessings at day’s weary … Continue reading →

Just the Beginning of Overflowing Gratitude

Janis Van Keuren

The Alaska Journey continues with just a tip of the gratitude iceberg that goes deep into my soul. Just a list and photos today.      Thank you, Lord, for     621) praying friends who hold you tight through storms and rejoice with you when you dance     622) thoughtful friends who surprise you with an anniversary cake on your cruise and share in your joy      623) kind and generous friends who share their homes, their hearts, their struggles, their faith–all … Continue reading →

Prayer–A Gift of God

Janis Van Keuren

This week, I will be reposting my series on Prayer.     Our pastor addressed an eagerly sought after topic yesterday, yet one that does not have easy answers.Prayer–Asking and Receiving from God.     I was alert, not drifting in and out. The congregation, unusually still, hanging on his every word. All hoping to find that magical formula that guarantees answered prayers. Prayers answered according to our heart’s desire.     The foundation for prayer was established first by our pastor.     “The Lord … Continue reading →

Recognize Danger When You See It

Janis Van Keuren

Ocotillo on the left, Saguaro on the right does not have arms yet          The Ocotillo and Saguaro stand like sentinels at the gate to Springtime in the Desert. However, as anyone knows, these desert dwellers do not invite an up-close and personal experience. Their needles could draw a profuse amount of blood if one would become entangled in these cacti, especially the Ocotillo. When we first moved here 17 years ago, our landscaper recommended against putting one in our backyard … Continue reading →

America~A Land Brimming With Blessings

Janis Van Keuren

From sea to shining sea, God has poured out His blessings on America. Waves crash white droplets against the bluffs and cliffs of the Pacific Coastline. Redwood forests rise and fall on a journey to the sea while soft white sand dunes create a pristine carpet hugging the Oregon coast.     Warm waters squish between wiggling toes along the Atlantic seaboard. Sparkling white sand beaches dance with lush marshlands and flow between sandy barge islands as the Atlantic Ocean winds … Continue reading →

Counting It Joy

Janis Van Keuren

Decorating the Garden         During these difficult days as I struggle through the changes, I am trying to remember:      “…whenever trouble comes your way, let it be an opportunity for joy. For when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything. If you need wisdom – if you want to know what God wants you … Continue reading →

Giving Thanks for the Abundant Blessings from His Hand

Janis Van Keuren

Mother’s Day Brunch by the Guys      My heart is full today as I watch my guys outside shooting baskets. What could make a mother’s heart more grateful than to see her family together, happy, playing around, glad to be there. My heart swelled with joy as all my men goofed around (even Chip, the wonder dog played ball). This was celebration. For this my heart longed. For this my heart rejoiced.      Temperate breezes whispered through wind chimes while … Continue reading →
