The Whale’s Tale

Janis Van Keuren

So God created the great creatures of the sea and every living and moving thing with which the water teems, according to their kinds, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Genesis 1:21 NIV      First sight is a spray that rises into the air. Then it curves its back, ready to dive.      The tail scoops water as it slices air and sea. This great creature of God’s design … Continue reading →

His Fragrance Surrounds Us

Janis Van Keuren

But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumphal procession in Christ and through us spreads everywhere the fragrance of the knowledge of him. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life.” 2 Corinthians 2:14-16a NIV      Have you ever been around Christians who draw you in just by their … Continue reading →

The Sun and Shield That Makes Us Blameless

Janis Van Keuren

Alaskan Sunset over the Pacific, on the ocean between Glacier Bay and Seward   “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Psalm 84:11b NIV       When we strolled out on the ship’s deck around 10:30 p.m., seeing the ball of orange setting into the Western horizon was a favor indeed. Most days were wrapped in clouds blowing brisk winds … Continue reading →

He Forgets Us Not

Janis Van Keuren

The real Alaska State Flower–the Forget-Me-Not Embarrassed in blue because the pretty white flower I had featured here originally is a dogwood. Not the Alaskan Forget-Me-Not. However, it is still a wildflower and you can find it here. This photo was taken by asseabird, courtesy of Flicker Commons License.                Blanketing the state of Alaska in riotous colors of pink, blue, and white are the perennial Alpine Forget-Me-Nots. Named the state flower of Alaska, these wildflowers cover slopes and mountainous meadows promising to … Continue reading →

The High One

Janis Van Keuren

Denali, “the High One,” capped in glacial white. Known today as Mt. McKinley.      “You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12 NIV      It was our 35th anniversary and the mountains were replete with forest green pines and shimmering aspens. Our hearts warmed with joy and memories. As we stood on the … Continue reading →

The Earth is Full of His Glory

Janis Van Keuren

May you find the glory of the Lord this weekend as you gaze upon His creation. May your heart and soul be filled with praise for Him. “Praise him, you highest heavens and you waters above the skies. Let them praise the name of the Lord, for he commanded and they were created. “you mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars, wild animals and all cattle, small creatures and flying birds,“Let them praise the name of the … Continue reading →

Soothing the Soul Storm

Janis Van Keuren

Clouds roll in and I watch the storm gathering momentum. When the pitter patter of raindrops start on my patio, I can usually snuggle under a comforter in winter, or open the blinds in summer to watch the sky pour out its heavenly drink for the parched earth.     But this storm is brewing in my soul. It’s in my bones and there is no cozy place to curl up. The lightning strikes and the thunder crashes standing my nerves … Continue reading →

Bearing Ripe Fresh Fruit

Janis Van Keuren

I’m surrounded by friends who have been ministering for the Lord for years. Teaching Bible Studies, hosting home groups, holding Christian financial series in their home, mentoring young women, working with pregnancy centers, or serving across the seas in Uganda or Europe on short-term mission trips. However, my life has not been that full of defined consistent ministry.     Oh, I’ve taught some Sunday school classes, had a neighborhood Bible Study meet in our dining room for a short while, … Continue reading →

A Mother’s Day Remembrance

Janis Van Keuren

When Oldest was in kindergarten, the students made a Mother’s Day present that included their handprints and part of a little one’s poem. I still have those handprints framed and hanging on the wall that leads up to our bedroom. It was a special reminder today of pudgy loving hands, warm hugs, and bedtime stories that never seemed to end. Cuddling up with my memories. My little hands reach up to you for hugs before I sleep … And … Continue reading →

He Is Risen

Janis Van Keuren

Two of Jesus’ disciples were walking on the road to Emmaus, just talking when a “stranger” joined them. The third person asked them what they were talking about, and they were dumbfounded.     “Are you the only one living in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that have happened there in these days?” Luke 24:17 NIV     “What things?” the stranger asked.     As Jesus’ downcast disciples explained the events of what we now call Holy Week, the stranger had some revealing … Continue reading →
